Buying these Makita tools from Amazon are a great value and are top quality but upon reciving my order I found that my contractor bag was ripped and the zipper was broken. After weeks of playing pass the buck with Makita customer service, Amazon decided to replace the whole unit to make it right. Although replacing the bag alone would have been far more simple and efficient and the cost of shipping the whole unit back and forth would much more than the retail cost of the bag alone. But of course that would be too easy and cheap so here i go packing and sending back my tools. GO FIGURE!

Exellent saw, very durable and accurate. Very easy to change angles. Everything locks in place nicely for easy transport. Also has a place to store the wrench for changing blades. Combined the saw with a Rigid stand and it makes a very convenient combo for home or at the jobsite. I looked at the Dewalt and Craftsman also but this saw seemed to be at the top of the class. The fluorescent light allows accurate cuts in dim light. Haven used the laser yet, but it could be useful.

There are nine positive stops: 0 degrees, and left and right at 15, 22.5, 31.6 and 45 degrees, and bevels can be set from 0 to 45 degrees left and right. Capacities are great, tooin the upright and center position, the saw will cut workpieces up to 4-1/2 inches high and 12-1/8 inches wide. A 45-degree left bevel still lets you cut stock 2-5/8 inches high and 12 inches wide, accommodating even the widest trim and moldings. The only thing we d change on this model is moving the rear bevel lever up front, but its not a big detractor.

The Makita saw is great. We are in the construction business; and have had them before and will stick with them. We thought the light would be in the way, but it turned out to be a great feature. The only drawback is a guide that sticks. Still, it is superior to other saws we had. We own another Makita; and only after ten years has it needed any replacement parts.

I purchased this saw from a different seller (sorry amazon, your prices were MUCH higher) and I have to say, I was VERY disappointed. I didn have any issues with the sliding action. It was smooth from the start. I liked the soft start, weight, cut limits, blade, fence, blade guard, and machining. The laser would not align with the cut so it was not accurate at all. Disappointing, but I can live with that. It would be dead on at the back of the cut and about an 1/16" off at the front and there was no way to make it parallel. The worst issues are to follow. I got the saw and used it for a while and realized that when I made a long cut, the cut would be wavy. The whole blade assembly gives slightly so you end up with a cut that is not straight. I called the seller I bought it from and they sent me a new saw. They hadn ever had any issues with it before so they figured it must just be a random bad saw. I got the new saw and sure enough, it had the same issue. But the issues didn end with the wavy cut on the second saw. The blade arbor nut was so out of alignment that you could literally see the blades shadow go back and forth over the laser line (if you understand what I mean). The blade would wobble dramatically. So if you combine the poorly aligned arbor nut and the overhead assembly that "gives" side to side if you put ANY type of lateral pressure, you get a horrible cut.

Popular Mechanics glowing review of this drill is well deserved in my opinion. It is light, fast, well-balanced, and easy to use. Boschs competing model (17618-01) feels faster and stronger, but it also weighs a ton, is a bit lengthy, requires you to switch between driving and drilling modes by rotating the 25 position clutch selector all the way back to zero, and the side handle slipped around a lot on the floor model I played with. With the 9-9/16" Makita you can instantly flip between driver, drill and hammer modes with a little switch, hoist it above your head for extended periods of time without strain, and the forward/reverse selector is also much easier to hit. Throw in the handy depth gauge thingy and the belt clip and its tough to miss those extra few BPMs Bosch has to offer unless you plan on dropping your drill on concrete with any degree of frequency. I can comment on Boschs battery life claims as I did not use one long enough to wear it down, but if you really need a lot more power than this, get something with a cord. This will absolutely not replace anybodys rotary hammer, but if all you need to do is plant some Tapcons or knock a hole through some brick to pull cable through, its a wondrous jack of all trades drill indeed. I have no complaints so far.

The battery is a standard Makita item and is very good. The best thing about this purchase is the price. Exceptionally good. Exactly what I expected. Good price. I will have to get another. Both my old ones failed at the same time. Just wanted to make sure the larger 2.6Ah would work.

And heres the verdict... The best tool is the impact driver. There is a 2-piece kit available that contains the impact driver and a much heavier hammerdrill which I used and found to be a much better tool. I would buy the 2-piece kit if I had it to do over. If you a contractor, as I am, and you intend to use these tools to make a living, as I do, I would recommend not buying this kit. DeWalt has kits that are heavier because they NiCad, but the saws work better. As much as I hate to say it, if I were to start from scratch and were to only buy one tool platform, it would be DeWalt. If I could mix and match, I would buy the DeWalt kit for the saws, and the Makita 2-piece for the drill and impact driver.
